The Path of the Disciple: Foundations of Following Jesus

What Does It Mean to Follow Jesus?

Following Jesus means trusting Him as the Son of God and choosing to live under His leadership each day. It begins by recognizing our sin, turning back to God, and placing our faith in Jesus Christ—the only One who can bring us into a right relationship with God.

Followers of Jesus openly confess their faith, are baptized, become part of a local church, and grow through Scripture and prayer. The journey may require sacrifice, but it is not about becoming perfect overnight. It is a lifelong transformation made possible by God’s grace, with the promise of forgiveness, His presence, and eternal life.

What It Means to Follow Jesus

Following Jesus is more than agreeing with His teachings or admiring His example. It is an active, daily commitment to live under His leadership. A disciple belongs to Jesus, learns from Him, and seeks to obey Him in every area of life.

Discipleship Is a Daily Commitment

Jesus made it clear that following Him requires self-denial:

“If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Me.”
—Luke 9:23

To deny ourselves does not mean that we have no value. It means surrendering our right to rule our own lives. Instead of placing our desires, plans, and preferences above everything else, we submit them to Jesus.

Taking up our cross daily means choosing faithfulness even when obedience is difficult or costly. The goal of discipleship is not simply to know more about Jesus, but to become more like Him and learn to obey Him as Lord.

Who Is Jesus?

The Christian faith rests on the identity and authority of Jesus Christ. The Bible does not present Him as merely a wise teacher, moral example, or one spiritual option among many.

Jesus is the Son of God who entered human history. He lived without sin, performed miracles, died in the place of sinners, and rose from the dead.

Jesus also made an exclusive claim about the way to God:

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except through Me.”
—John 14:6

According to the Bible, reconciliation with God is found through Jesus Christ alone. Following Him begins with recognizing who He is and trusting in what He has done.

Why We Need the Gospel

The call to follow Jesus begins with an honest understanding of the human condition. Every person has sinned and needs God’s grace.

The Problem of Sin

Sin is more than committing bad actions. At its core, sin is living independently from God. It includes ignoring His presence, resisting His authority, and breaking His commands in our thoughts, attitudes, words, and actions.

Sin brings spiritual death, guilt, and separation from God. This separation cannot be overcome through moral effort, religious activity, or good works.

We cannot save ourselves.

God’s Remedy: Salvation by Grace

The good news of the gospel is that Jesus did for us what we could never do for ourselves. He took the penalty of sin upon Himself, died in our place, and rose from the dead so that forgiveness and eternal life could be offered to us.

Salvation is not something we earn. It is a gift of God’s grace:

“For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
—Ephesians 2:8–9

Grace means that salvation is received, not achieved. We are made right with God through faith in Jesus Christ, not through our own goodness or religious accomplishments.

Our Response: Repentance and Faith

The gospel calls for a personal response. The Bible describes this response in two closely connected ways: repentance and faith.

Repentance

Repentance means turning away from sin and self-rule and turning toward God. It involves a genuine change of mind, heart, and direction.

Repentance is more than feeling sorry about the consequences of sin. It is acknowledging that we have been wrong, surrendering our lives to God, and choosing to follow His ways.

Faith

Faith means placing our trust in the person and work of Jesus Christ. It is relying on Him rather than depending on our own efforts to make ourselves acceptable to God.

True faith is more than believing certain facts about Jesus. It is personally trusting Him as Savior and submitting to Him as Lord.

The Beginning of a New Life

Following Jesus does not mean that a person immediately becomes perfect. It means beginning a new life of trust, surrender, and obedience.

A disciple continues to learn from Jesus, depend on His grace, turn away from sin, and grow in faith. This journey is lived one day at a time.

Christian discipleship can be summarized simply:

Know who Jesus is. Trust in what He has done. Surrender your life to Him. Follow Him daily.
